Ford Focus RS MK3 Tuning.

Surely the hot hatch of 2016. The Ford Focus RS MK 3 with its 2.3 litre Ecoboost engine is the fastest and most capable Ford RS to date.

Its twin scroll turbocharger gives a strong, linear, almost normally aspirated feeling power curve and is a great example of how things have moved on with turbocharged 4 cylinder engines.

However, as with most production cars, it feels a little "soft" out of the box.

Never fear - As always, we have the solutions...

We have had the Focus RS MK3 since launch data and indeed still have one on the company fleet.

The vehicles PCM is the Bosch MED17 which we have many years of experience with over various platforms, and its strategy is also very similar in architecture to the Mustang Ecoboost which we had already been calibrating for some time.

As a result, we were one of the first companies to offer conversions for this awesome car and we have three fully developed and tested packages on offer, up to and including 420PS. (Note: June 2020, our 500+ conversion is almost finished).

From the 380 package upwards the car really does come to life! The car really is a hoot to drive with 520NM of torque and 360PS, but its simply incredible with 580NM and 420PS.

As authorised COBB Pro-tuners we are also able to supply our calibrations on the amazing COBB Accessport which means you can also get a whole host of extra features to play with!

 

MSD 380 (up to 380PS)
This calibration works perfectly on a totally standard car and lifts the power restrictions from within the ECU, further enhancing the power output to 540NM and 380PS.

The rev limit is extended slightly and all the temperature protection features of the management system are retained and further optimised to suit the vehicles new power output. Rest assured that if your coolant, oil, exhaust or charge temperatures get too high, the ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. Full LSPI / Knock control is retained at factory safety levels. Some tuners remove all this capability in order to achieve their power - Take care out there.

Additional hardware needed:

  • None.

Personalisations Available: (At time of programming)

  • Decat MIL Eliminated (For vehicle with a De-Cat fitted)
  • Launch Control RPM set-point options of 4000 / 4500 / 5000 rpm.
  • Stop / Start disable.
  • Eco shift light disable.
  • Enhanced "Pops & Burbles" sound and RPM threshold.
  • Extreme "Pops & Burbles" sound available for vehicles with no catalyst.
  • Enable / Disable "Pops & Burbles" in Normal / Sport / modes as required.

Total cost installed to the car via OBD including an initial diagnostic session, labour and vat = £399.00

 

Note:
A great many additional features are available such as remote custom tuning, flat foot shifting, enhanced launch control, switchable maps, anti theft features and even valet modes if you opt to install this calibration utilising the COBB Accessport. Please see the "Accessport & Multimaps" tab for more details

(This calibration can be supplied via E-Mail to existing COBB Accessport users at £199)

MSD 400 (up to 400PS)
This calibration is designed to work with the factory hardware and a free flowing air filter to help with the extra air flow. This calibration further increases the engines power over our MSD 380, increasing the torque output to 560 NM low down and extending the power higher up the rev range to 400PS.

The rev limit is extended slightly and all the temperature protection features of the management system are retained and further optimised to suit the vehicles new power output. Rest assured that if your coolant, oil, exhaust or charge temperatures get too high, the ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. Full LSPI / Knock control is retained at factory safety levels. Some tuners remove all this capability in order to achieve their power - Take care out there.

Additional hardware needed:

  • High flow air filter recomended.
  • 1 step colder spark plugs recomended.

  • Launch Control RPM set-point options of 4000 / 4500 / 5000 rpm.

MSD 420 (up to 420PS)
This is our maximum power output on factory engine internals and further increases the engines torque output to 580 NM and peak power output to 420PS.

The rev limit is extended slightly and all the temperature protection features of the management system are retained and further optimised to suit the vehicles new power output. Rest assured that if your coolant, oil, exhaust or charge temperatures get too high, the ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. Full LSPI / Knock control is retained at factory safety levels. Some tuners remove all this capability in order to achieve their power - Take care out there.

Additional hardware needed:

  • High flow air filter.
  • Uprated Intercooler.
  • Turbo Back exhaust system with sports cat or decat.
  • 1 step colder spark plugs.

  • Launch Control RPM set-point options of 4000 / 4500 / 5000 rpm.

Focus RS MK3 500BHP

MSD-500+

Development of this conversion is already well underway with over 500bhp and more achieved. However, the finalisation has been held up by the Covid-19 situation. We expect to finalise this conversion in Quarter 3. 2020.

Focus RS MK3 owners can add a COBB Accessport and MSD Multimaps
(Huge array of extra features plus 3 different power levels, Valet and Anti Theft on the fly!)

The COBB Accessport is a firm favourite here. The handset transforms the vehicle by adding the option of up to six gauges on screen at any time out of a list of literally hundreds. It gives you data-logging and remote E-tuning capability, diagnostic facilities for reading codes and resetting KAM etc and allows us as tuners to harness the additional power of the COBB Ecoboost firmware to deliver even more awesome features!

These features also include the ability to swap between MSD power stages in seconds (with the engine still running) The swap is done by pressing the cruise control cancel button and then using the + / - buttons to swap slots. The slot is shown by the rev counter as you press the buttons. (IE: It points to 1000rpm for slot 1, 2000rpm for slot 2, etc)

COBB Accessport MSD Multimaps

Yes, its as simple as that.
Pressing a button on your steering wheel can change your engines power output. The car also defaults to the last used slot on power up, so you can turn the car off in standard power if you are loaning the car to a friend for example... Imagine having STD Power, MSD 380, MSD 420, A Valet mode (wont rev past 3000rpm or make more than 5psi boost and also an anti-theft device, all accessible from your steering wheel controls! With MSD Multimaps, this is your new reality!

 

All of our Accessport calibrations come with the following awesome feature's enabled:

Flat foot shifting:
Enabled on all our calibrations, this features allows the accelerator pedal to stay fully depressed while shifting gears. The use of the clutch pedal will still be necessary, but keeping the accelerator pedal fully depressed between shifts allows for the turbo to stay spooled between gears, so you can concentrate on the fastest gearshift and let MSD take care of the engine speed.



No hassle launch control:
No more entering menus in a hurry! With our calibrations the process of getting into launch mode is simply having the clutch pedal and accelerator pedal depressed fully. The engine speed will quickly raise to the determined RPM set in the calibration file. (Adjustable on request)



5-way launch control set-points:
This feature enables users to switch between 5 different launch control set points on the fly. You can use the factory cruise control system to switch between different set points.
Our calibrations usually have 5 set points enabled from 4500rpm in slot 1 to 5500rpm in slot 5. 
(Slot choice varies due to other features)

 

Burnout Mode: (Focus ST & Mustang Only)
This feature enables users to perform a nice controlled burnout with a simple button press on the steering wheel. Just hit the button and mash your foot to the floor for an ECU controlled flat foot burnout.

 

Transbrake: (Mustang Only)
Launch control for the auto transmission cars! Engage transbrake and mash the pedal. Just release teh brake to launch!!



MSD Multimaps: (Optional, at extra cost)
A firm favourite... This feature gives you 3 different power levels available at any one time. Imagine having MSD 250 (STD Power with enhanced MSD driveability and all our features), MSD 280 and MSD 300, all switchable from the cruise control buttons, even with the engine running. Imagine also being able to dictate which of those power levels the vehicle loaded up with when you turn it on… Well you can. Ask us about MSD Multimaps.

 

MSD Custom tuning, remotely!
Using the awesome data logging capabilities of the Accessport, we invite you to send us datalogs via E-mail so that we can custom tune your purchased calibration to better suit your own, individual vehicle. After log analysis, we will send you a further optimised tune that is based of feedback from your own vehicle. This feature comes standard with all our tunes for those owners who wish to get involved in some customisation but don't worry, you can enjoy the product forever without getting involved in custom tuning should you wish to.

All our calibrations come with full printed instructions further detailing the above features and how to do the datalogging for your custom tuning and the first couple of revisions are included in your purchase price. (We normally only need the two...)

(Anti-Theft and Valet modes are now also available on request in slots 4 and 5.)

If you are looking to go the excellent COBB Accessport route you can obtain one of these direct from us, with your chosen calibration pre-installed ready for fitment yourself at home. Cooler Spark Plugs

A step colder spark plug grade is a worthwhile upgrade for cars that are used hard at increased power levels.

We have numerous options available in our webshop but our most popular is the NGK option.

 

CBV Upgrade

Over time, the standard compressor bypass valve diaphragm and spring become weak, leading to potential compressor pressure leaks.

We find the Turbosmart options a very worth upgrade.

 

 

The amazing COBB Accessport

The COBB Accessport provides an incredibly powerful tool that allows you to install / remove our tune yourself and incorporates a very high quality diagnostic code reader and a data-logger that allows you to both watch and record data for up to ten hours from a huge list of over 200 parameters. These are not just generic OBD parameters either, these are Ford hardware level PID's such as AFR. spark advance, individual cylinder knock levels, boost pressure, air temperatures and many more.

Additional Features:

  • Enabled on all our Accessport calibrations, this features allows for easy use of the launch control system.
