Ford Focus RS MK3 Tuning Packages.

Surely the hot hatch of 2016? The Ford Focus RS MK 3 with its 2.3 litre Ecoboost engine is the fastest and most capable Ford RS to date.

Its twin scroll turbocharger gives a strong, linear, almost normally aspirated feeling power curve and is a great example of how things have moved on with turbocharged 4 cylinder engines, but as with most production cars, it feels a little "soft" out of the box.

Focus Rs MK3 Tuning

Never fear - As always, we have the solutions...

We have our own in house Focus RS MK3, and we already had access to the ecu calibration long before ours arrived as some of our installers also have the cars personally. This allowed us to get underway with dyno and track development of the vehicles using our trusted tuning network. The PCM is the Bosch MED17 which we have many years of experience with over various platforms, and its strategy is also very similar in architecture to the Mustang Ecoboost which we have already been calibrating for some time.

As a result, we were one of the first companies to offer conversions for this awesome car and we have three fully developed and tested packages on offer, up to and including 420PS.

From the 380 package upwards the car really does come to life! The MK3 Focus RS is excellent with 520NM of torque and 360PS, but its simply incredible with 550NM and 380 - 420PS.

MSD360 Package (Up to 360PS)
This package works perfectly on a totally standard car and lifts the power restrictions from within the ECU and enhances the power output very mildy to 520NM and 360PS thus avoiding putting any undue strain at all on the power-train.

The factory rev limiter is retained, as are all the temperature protection features carefully programmed in by Ford, such as power limiting if coolant, oil, exhaust or charge temperatures get high. The ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. Some tuners remove all this to achieve their power - Take care out there.

The package includes the supply and fitment of:

  • Evolution Chips MSD360 ECU calibration
  • Full Engine Management Diagnostics Check

Options Available:

  • Decat MIL Eliminated (For vehicle with a De-Cat fitted)
  • Launch Control RPM set-point options of 4000 / 4500 / 5000 rpm.
  • Stop / Start disable.
  • Eco shift light disable.
  • Enhanced "Pops & Burbles" sound and RPM threshold.
  • Enable / Disable "Pops & Burbles" in Normal / Sport / modes as required.

MSD380 Package (up to 380PS)

MSD400 Package (up to 400PS)
This package is the best seller.
Its designed to work with the factory hardware, but a free flowing air filter is recommended to help with the extra air flow. This calibration further increases the top end power, retaining the same 550NM of torque low down but extending the power higher up the rev range to 400PS.

The factory rev limiter is retained, as are all the temperature protection features carefully programmed in by Ford, such as power limiting if coolant, oil, exhaust or charge temperatures get high. The ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. Some tuners remove all this to achieve their power - Take care out there.

The package includes the supply and fitment of:

  • Evolution Chips MSD400 ECU calibration
  • Full Engine Management Diagnostics Check

Options Available:

  • Decat MIL Eliminated (For vehicle with a De-Cat fitted)

MSD420 Package (up to 420PS)

This calibration is only suitable for vehicles with the following hardware modifications installed:

  • Uprated Intercooler
  • Turbo Back exhaust system with sports cat or decat.
  • High flow air filter

This package increases the top end power of the 400 conversion, with a slight torque increase up to 560NM and extending the power up the rev range to 420PS.

The factory rev limiter is retained, as are all the temperature protection features carefully programmed in by Ford, such as power limiting if coolant, oil, exhaust or charge temperatures get high. The ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. Mk3 Focus RS on the dyno

The Focus RS MK3 has a proactive stability system that actively predicts traction levels required and can turn on and off the rear axle, as well as move power around each corner independently in order to provide the required level of traction. This level of intelligence adds a curveball for tuning on a dyno as the system doesn’t really like fixed or independent axle dynos and starts to actively shift power around the axles after peak torque, resulting in an unstable graph and often, less power available. So whilst it runs perfectly safely, the power readings will often come out wrong.

Thankfully, Ford engineers incorporated a dyno mode which disables the rear axle and lets us run in full time FWD and produces perfect graphs.

This is a video of one of the MK3 Focus RS's we have been using for development, running in 4wd mode.

The vehicle records around the manufacturers quoted torque figure but falls a little shy of factory power, you can see how at high RPM the graph starts to get wavey as the ECU intervenes because its sensing vehicle instability. We are working closely with Dyno Dynamics on a solution though.

This is a vehicle tuned with our 400PS conversion running in FWD mode.

As you can see, it recorded both standard power and tuned power pretty accurately in FWD mode.
